Wildlife Paradise
Where do the buffalo roam? Anywhere they want within the boundaries of Elk Island National Park. Canada's first federal wildlife sanctuary was established in 1906, and continues to be an important nature preserve filled with herds of elk, bison and moose.

Located 45 minutes east of Edmonton straddling Hwy 16, Elk Island is a birdwatcher's paradise, with more than 230 species living in the park's meadows, forests and wetlands. There are 2 different campgrounds, the 80 site Sandy Beach Campground and the Oster Group Campground for larger groups.

Recreation
The park is open year-round for recreation. There are over 90 kilometres of trails, which draw thousands of cross-country skiers every year, a nine-hole golf course, and picnic areas. The park also features several lakes which are ideal for short canoe trips.
