What was then
Back in the swinging '60s, the pre-eminent fast-food establishment across Canada was the famed A&W drive-in. But some things have since changed since the days when food trays could be neatly hooked around a car's roll-down window. For instance, a few of the drive-ins are still around, although A&W has since expanded to the mall circuit, where Teenburgers and that patented draft-style root beer are offered behind the counter (as opposed to being trotted out to pop's old DeSoto).
What is now
Although we're not likely to see the Root Bear grapple with Ronald McDonald on pay-per-view anytime soon, A&W still gives the golden arches a run for its money. We're not talking about a minuscule franchise here. In business since 1919, A&W currently boasts more than 1,000 outlets in 16 countries.
