There are a lot of misconceptions about diabetes in our society. It is often wrongly thought of as a fairly minor condition that doesn’t affect many people. What people don’t know, however, is that one in 20 Canadians will develop diabetes in their life-time. Also, many are unaware that it is a lifetime affliction and that it can cause side-effects such as blindness, kidney failure, strokes and gangrene. Few know that over two million people are currently afflicted with diabetes or that this affliction is life-long. Not many people are aware that 80% of people with diabetes are overweight. These are just a few of the reasons why the Alberta Foundation for Diabetes Research is so important.
What They Do
The AFDR is a not-for-profit, charitable organization committed to raising awareness for the purpose of raising funds for diabetes research. Since 1988, when the foundation was formed by a group of volunteers whose lives were all commonly touched by diabetes, it has gone on to raise millions of dollars for research for the cure. Today, the foundation is composed of volunteers, scientists and professionals. Their current goals are to increase awareness and steadily increase their profile and infrastructure so that they can grow towards putting more and more money into the cure.
What You Can Do
It is a volunteer-run organization, and is thus always looking for extra helping hands. It’s tough to find volunteers when many businesses can’t even find qualified employees, but the few that they have are extremely dedicated and they would love to find more of the same. If your PDA is full and you can’t lighten your load to help out, why not lighten your wallet instead? Donations are always welcome and you know it’s going to a good cause.
