The Azimuth Theatre Association focuses on performances that make a difference to people. This non-profit organization is committed to creating visual extravaganzas with an encouragement to explore life from other perspectives. In support of original Canadian content, Azimuth produces and promotes work that manifests social realities. A main goal is to evoke compassion in the individual to see things through another set of eyes; to shift the understanding from the effecting to the affected.
On Stage
What this has translated into is a repertoire that tackles current social problems with feeling and depth. The company has tackled issues like teen suicide, domestic violence and substance abuse. It shares its message with thousands of audience members by taking its plays on tour throughout Alberta and Western Canada. Communities, universities, schools, conferences and even correctional centres have all experienced a viewing some of Azimuth’s performances.
Impact
Over 150,000 youth and adults included have been in the audience at at least one of this theatre company’s impactful performances. Expanding its grounds for exposure, Azimuth has acquired another local venue as of 2001, called The Living Room Playhouse. Here is where more authentic Canadian work will be featured for the adults. This studio style theatre holds a quaint 55 audience members, but, including the lobby, the entire space of this Playhouse holds a maximum of 250. Aside from being the home for eclectic performances, The Living Room Playhouse is also available for rent.
