The Design Details
Golf course architect Rod Whitman’s first Alberta signature course was the challenging Wolf Creek links near Ponoka. Whitman didn’t replicate Wolf Creek at Blackhawk, in Edmonton’s far west end. Whitman took the land’s contours and worked the 18 hole layout with subtle changes that conformed to the lay of the land. The result is a course that has been praised by local golfers for its emphasis on shot-making and strategic play.

On the Course and Beyond
What golfers get from tee to green on Blackhawk’s 18 holes is a round full of challenges and rewards. The holes feature a mix of wide open and constricted fairways while the greens have a range of tricky contours. The back nine features two signature holes, the par-5 11th, which starts high above the valley and drops to a small peninsula green, and the aptly named par 3 16th, named Deception, which makes golfers carry their tee shots over 120 yards of water to a narrow green. For golfers who survive the rigors of Blackhawk, the clubhouse offers a chance to survey the course while they relax and reminisce.
