A chain of cosmetic stores first made famous for not testing products on animals, The Body Shop was way ahead of all environmental trends when it first opened in Brighton, England in 1976. The store began with just 25 homemade products, focusing on skin care and lotions made from exotic natural ingredients developed by Anita Roddick. The company has since expanded to about 2,000 stores in 50 different countries, sharing its pursuit of social and environmental change with customers who want to look, feel and smell good. Supporting community trade, activating self-esteem, defending human rights and protecting our planet are all Body Shop philosophies that span the globe, including several Toronto locations.
The Body Shop has seen many trends come and go since opening its first Canadian store in the Yorkville district in 1980, but the products on its shelves remain timeless as ever. Hair styling needs, home and personal fragrances, hand and foot moisturizers and bath and body lotions, gels and butters are staples of the store. A broad range of make-up options can be explored with complimentary makeovers to help achieve the perfect look. The men are also taken care of with a range of skin care products, stylish fragrances and items for a soothing shave.
A range of aromatherapy products are available at The Body Shop, each one designed to enhance a state of well being: Mandarin, Lavender, Ylang Ylang and Bergamot are the varieties that can help enhance any mood. Fragrances include the cruelty-free White Musk, and a system that allows you to “invent your scent” by mixing and matching the available options. Hemp products provide intense therapy for moisture-starved skin of every texture. The basics of a spa can be brought home, including luxurious body butter and salt scrub, along with tools of the massage trade. The Body Shop hasn’t forgotten its roots either, with the continued popularity of creations like tea tree oil facial wash and mango mist.
