Since 1960, the Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre has been a staple of the southeast Edmonton area. When it first opened, it was more of a strip mall, but that all changed when Sears was thrown into the mix in 1967. From there, it blossomed into the flourishing mall it is today. Though it is only a one-story mall, it has over 100 exciting stores. The biggest mainstays of the mall are the Sears, the Zellers, the Safeway, the Sports Mart and the famous Bowling Alley. It is comparable in size to St. Albert Centre or Westmount Mall and it offers a wide selection of stores. The plus side of that is, it isn’t over-crowded like West Edmonton Mall or Kingsway can sometimes be. Bonnie Doon Mall was the first mall built in Edmonton and still remains a cornerstone of the community.
What’s in Store?
You can find tons of mall-friendly stores like Coles, Suzy Shier, San Francisco, HMV, The Body Shop, A Buck or Two and several other fixtures that a mall should never be without. There is also a fair-sized food court, if you’re in the mood for some snacking or a full meal. They also have some stores that are a little more out there, in a good way, like Aroma Café, China Kitchen, Marlin Travel and Vitality Health Foods.
Icing on the Cake
Not only is this mall handy for many residents in the south east, it’s also kind of a party mall. It’s pretty close to Whyte Ave. There are a couple of bars in the direct vicinity. It’s open reasonably late and has a licensed bowling alley. Although it is located far from the hip shops on Whyte Avenue, it still serves as a favorite stopping destination for many of Old Strathcona residents. What more could you ask for?
