Wandering along Whyte Avenue, you can’t help but be drawn into Broad Valley Books. The street’s got so much character already it can become almost overpowering. A glimpse down 105th Street pulls readers into a scholarly space located beneath a simple blue sign that reads “Books.”
For the Family
Broad Valley’s collection is a diverse mix of new and used: classics of literature, sci-fi and fantasy, histories and biographies with a 20th century emphasis. If you regret holding off from buying a new title a year or two ago, or even longer, chances are it’s on the shelf here. Ask the owner/operator to tap his encyclopedic knowledge for a book’s location. A second alcove sets the shop apart from other independent bookshops with a space for young readers. The children’s collection is plentiful, and there’s a kids table and chairs for impressionable minds to sit at while they explore their favourite authors. Poetry and dramas are tucked in the back of the kids’ room too.
Entrepreneurial Spirit
Foot traffic along Whyte helped establish Broad Valley in 2007. Now that the young owner has the new location, he needs to make his shop an Edmonton icon. Consignments not accepted, but Broad Valley will buy books in good condition as demand requires.
