In autumn 1908, Edmonton became the first prairie city with a public streetcar system, rolling over 21 kilometres of track. In January of 1980, the Edmonton Radial Railway Society was incorporated as an Alberta Society. Their mission was, and still is, to preserve and interpret the history and technology of street railways, particularly Edmonton’s streetcar system.
Take a ride
The volunteers of the Edmonton Radial Railway Society operate a daily streetcar service for visitors in Fort Edmonton Park and in Old Strathcona. There is a streetcar barn that you can visit to see restoration of historic vehicles in progress. The society collects and restores significant artifacts in relation to street railways. They also operate the High Level Streetcar, which traverses the High Level Bridge.
