Don and Doris Fisher, the pioneers of The Gap, started out selling jeans from a single store in San Francisco over 30 years ago. Today, The Gap has grown into an international clothing giant, with countless stores in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, the United States and Canada. Little did Don and Doris know that their entrepreneurial brainchild would grow into a mega-corporation offering three brands (The Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic), with annual sales exceeding $11 billion! Who says the hippie movement was anti-capitalist?
The Influence
With one of the most innovative and successful advertising campaign of any clothing retailer, commercials for The Gap have become part of pop culture. The Gap's advertisements have done more to popularize casual attire than all those office "casual Fridays" could ever hope to. Each new slogan is guaranteed to start a trend. You can also count on The Gap for fashion staples, such as jeans, t-shirts, and colourful socks. For the ultimate in casual wear, including those famous khaki pants, check out any of Ottawa's Gap boutiques.
