Who says perogies should only be served in bite-sized chunks? This small Alberta town has made a bigger statement about this Ukrainian cuisine.

The Town
Glendon, Alberta, is a village located west of Bonnyville and with a population of barely 400. The amenities are pretty well the same as any other village in the province, with a gas station, two grocery stores, two convenience store, a hotel, motel and hockey arena. For tourists, Glendon is located near Lakeland Provincial Park and at least seven lakes (such as Minnie Lake, Bangs Lake and Moose Lake). Good fishing and camping facilities exist at most of these areas.

The DrawThe real curiosity, however, is right in the town on Perogy Drive. That's where a giant fiberglass and steel perogy, standing 25 feet tall, 12 feet wide and weighing 6,000 pounds, greets visitors. The idea for the perogy was concocted back in 1989, when the village council decided to create something unusual and extraordinary to boost tourism in the area. The monument certainly got a lot of worldwide media attention when it was unveiled Aug. 31, 1993, and continues to be a constant source of curiosity to visitors.
