Gold Bar Park is one city park that may be busier in winter than in summer. The park's picnic sites and bike, hiking and blading trails, plus the bridge connection to Rundle Park, draw plenty of summer visitors, but Gold Bar's extensive network of cross-country ski trails, covering more than seven kilometres, brings out hundreds of ski specialists during the winter.
Winter Wonderland
The cross-country trails range from flat tracks (perfect for beginners) to a series of hilly loops, which can challenge the most expert skier. Trail grooming, funded in part by the Edmonton Nordic Ski Cub, means the tracks are usually in fine shape. The trails are lit at night so the regular 9-5 crowd can grab some ski time once the sun has dropped below the horizon. A central heated pavilion, complete with washrooms, is a good spot for skiers to warm up before or after hitting the trails.
