Good Goes Green
First opening in 1991 in Calgary at a time when the environment wasn’t the huge global issue it is today, the Good Earth franchise was ahead of its time in its awareness of the importance of fair trade and the absence of the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals in their coffee beans. The public interest in these issues has not waned, but only grown, and Good Earth has grown with it, blossoming into a company unique to Alberta and B.C. And, staying true to its original idea to serve high-quality coffee made with 100 per cent organic beans that are fair trade and shade-grown (beans that are harvested with the protective use of the natural forest canopy, rather than the clear-cut, open, sun-drenched farmland of many coffee-bean fields), Good Earth embodies and supports exactly what it says on its signs: a Good Earth.

Earthly Consciousness
Good Earth’s lunches and baked goods are made with wholesome, fresh ingredients and are prepared daily in the kitchen. Coffee beans are locally roasted in small batches for the freshest java possible, and all locations are completely wind-powered. Consequently, those with a social, environmental, and community conscience will feel right at home in the University of Alberta campus location, where the idealism of youthful students acts as a great atmosphere-driver in this already cozy café.

Coffee Condundrum
However, Good Earth, no matter the location, is a coffeehouse in which you can feel comfortable and connected to community and a sense of goodwill, while also enjoying fantastic coffee with a friend, or even by yourself. Those who like coffee will always favour it, but why like only mediocre coffee when you can be “in love with (the) great coffee” of Good Earth?
