The city’s better-known recreation facilities may be located in the downtown core or south of the North Saskatchewan River, but the Grand Trunk Leisure Centre offers diverse fitness options any time of year to folks living north of the Yellowhead Highway. The 25-metre swimming pool has five lanes, plenty for selective swimmers who seek out this hidden gem. The air-conditioned fitness centre is equipped with free weights, universal weight machines and cardiovascular workout gear like stationary bikes and treadmills. The attached Grand Trunk Arena is a prime target for all kinds of skaters, and the entire facility is located in a public park with soccer pitches, baseball diamonds and tennis courts.
But Grand Trunk is about more than getting a workout. Leisure activities include the pool’s waterslide for kids and a communal hot tub and steam room. There’s also a heated sunroom enclosed behind windows and an open-air sundeck for warmer summer months. The facilities at Grand Trunk are simple, basic and good — a fine alternative and less crowded option than might be found elsewhere in Edmonton.
