The Organization
Sometimes being number one isn't the best place to be in. Even though the numbers for those stricken with heart and stroke disease has been reduced by 50 per cent in the last 40 years, it's still the number one killer in Canada.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NWT, and Nunavut is a non-profit organization that is currently funding more than 60 research projects at the universities of Alberta and Calgary in order to find the causes of deadly heart disease and stroke.
Over those years, research has been the key to determining the causes of heart disease and stroke. Three generations ago, we did not know that high blood pressure and smoking increased the chances of developing the disease.
The continued efforts of organizations like The Heart and Stroke Foundation have helped bring down the number of people afflicted with heart disease and stroke, but there's still more research to done, there's still more people to save.
The Volunteer Programs
There are many ways in which you can support the organization. You can participate in their many events during the year, such as Ski for Heart or the Family Run. The group also accepts donations all year round. Don't wait until someone you know gets afflicted with this deadly disease to get involved.
