Profile Last Updated: January 08, 2009
Since 1984, HIV Edmonton has been serving the local community with its small staff and sympathetic volunteers. They provide critical information and support for people dealing with HIV and AIDS. Their goal is to spread awareness of the disease to try and minimize the number of afflictions and help people with HIV live long, stigma-free lives. These services aren’t only for sufferers, but also family and friends who want to gain a better understanding of the disease.
Services
HIV Edmonton offers a wide range of information to provide support for people infected or affected, to educate people on the facts and fallacies associated with being afflicted and to prevent its spreading. They have pamphlets and posters, along with a library of over 900 books and 200 movies in the Thom Edge Resource Centre. They also have training programs and a youth coordinator on site to help you sort through their variety of resources, as well as several community events year round.
Walk for Life
It’s a win-win situation. You get entertainment, exercise, prizes and food and you also get to raise money for HIV Edmonton. The annual Walk for Life has been around for over 16 years and it seems to get better each time. It’s usually held in September, but the earlier you sign up, the more pledges you can get. It’s a 5km walk so you won’t need heavy training. They have also held a strip-a-thon, a retro-dance party and a film festival, so don’t expect boring education sessions from HIV Edmonton. They are always looking for donors, sponsors and volunteers, so if you can, please do lend your services to HIV Edmonton.
