With three locations in Edmonton, and one in Leduc, another in Saskatoon, this is a restaurant empire that just keeps growing and growing thanks to its vivacious and colourful owner, Yianni Psalios. So vivacious and colourful, in fact, that the Edmonton trio of restaurants and Psalios’ family are the features of the Food Network’s popular show “The Family Restaurant.” But not only does Psalios and his family welcome camera crews and reality TV into their restaurants, they also embrace all of their customers with open arms.
Plates for your Palate
With hanging plants and authentic family photos decorating the walls of the restaurant, the Koutouki Taverna gives you the most authentic Greek experience you’re going to find this side of the Atlantic. Particularly worthy of mention is the calamari, roast lamb, and Saganaki. Also a treat for the taste buds is Yianni’s Meze, which is a meal meant for two or more people featuring samples from about a dozen dishes, savouring each salad, dip, vegetable, and cut of meat the way Koutouki recommends: slowly. And, if you can still manage to open your mouth one more time, baclava and bougatsa for dessert will definitely have you moving your belt a couple notches to the left.
Break it Down
A restaurant that welcomes groups and parties, Friday and Saturday evenings at the Koutouki Taverna offer live entertainment with belly dancers, the traditional breaking of plates, and Zorba dancing (in which the staff fully urge customer participation). By embracing family and friends and believing in the sharing of the warmth of fantastic food, great wine and fulfilling companionship over a meal, the Koutouki Taverna is an exuberant, humorous and delicious restaurant. Opa!
