Stone Sculptures
The focus at Murungo Ano Penga is the sculpture work of the Shona People of Zimbabwe. These sculptures are beautifully captured in stone. The Shona people began creating these statues over 2000 years ago. They were passed down through generations, with some modern versions evolving throughout the 2 millennia. These statues are considered to be the most prominent movement ever to emerge from the African continent. The owner was a former soldier who came across many pieces of art during his time in the service. Seeing no end to the war, he decided that he would come over here and sell the art and pay the artists fair prices to try and create change that he knew war never could. Since 1999, he has set up this gallery and a method for distributing this wonderful work.

Dealing Direct
Murungo deals directly with their friends in Zimbabwe who are well acquainted with the artists. Therefore, they know the pieces and the artists inside out. They even offer an artist bio of the person who made the piece of art you have purchased, upon request. They can guarantee care and quality in everything they deliver. As the major dealer of the Shona artifacts in Edmonton, they also distribute other African treasures, such as intricate fabrics and batiks, paintings and sketches, wood carvings and masks from various African tribes. They also feature home décor, furniture and accent pieces. But these are genuine pieces of African art with the artists paid a fair price for their work—do not be surprised by a bigger price tag, just be glad to help out starving artists in Africa.
