The Museum
When Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip visited Edmonton in the spring of 2005 to help celebrate Alberta's Centennial, they also brought a special commendation for the former Provincial Museum of Alberta. The museum was newly designated as The Royal Alberta Museum, a fitting tribute for a facility that is always looking for new ways to help people discover more about the world around them.
The Attraction
Over the past decade, the museum has been named among the top museums in Canada. A strategic mix of blockbuster travelling shows including dinosaurs, whales and treasures from ancient China, combined with the museum's popular Bug Room, habitat exhibits and historical collections, has made it a popular attraction with locals and visitors.
The Exhibits
Museum exhibits range from the deeply serious, like the recent Anno Domini display on the influence of Jesus Christ through the centuries, to the light-hearted, like the popular teddy bears exhibit at Christmas.
Screenings and More
The museum hosts more than just exhibits. The Edmonton Film Society uses the museum’s theatre for its regular screenings of celluloid classics. The 417-seat facility is also used for the popular Best of the Banff Film Festival, and various performing arts groups have also staged productions there.

Located in a park that overlooks the North Saskatchewan River, it shares the grounds with Government House, which is the former lieutenant-governors' mansion. The museum, completed in 1967, was built with stone quarried from across Canada, including distinctive Manitoba Tyndall stone comprising the walls and Quebec granite on the floors.
