The slouching bulldog figure of Sir Winston Churchill greets visitors on the northwest corner of the downtown square, a meeting place for E-towners for years. In the summer, it's an ideal spot to head to for lunch and when festival season hits, onlookers are greeted with a plethora of free entertainment. Along with being the central site for The Street Performers Festival, First Night, A Taste of Edmonton, The Works and free Jazz City events, the square was also used in 1999 to commemorate the renaming of Capilano Freeway to Wayne Gretzky Drive, with the Great One himself in attendance.
The Deal
In 2004, the square underwent a series of renovations that transformed the area into something city officials hope will be more amenable to the festivals. The downside? Not much grass on the premises like there used to be, although city officials would have argued that countless activities on the square played havoc with the turf anyway.
