Providing a Sanctuary Built on Kindness
Letting someone stay at your house is one thing; building a foundation based on providing comfort and sanctuary for strangers is another level of compassion entirely. The Compassion House Foundation is an organization built to provide a temporary shelter for women with breast cancer. Sorrentino’s Compassion House is a temporary shelter for out-of-town women who are undergoing treatment at the Cross Cancer Institute.
What Compassion Means
The Compassion house is designed to comfort women going through breast cancer treatment. There are seven suites in the home that women can share with a companion or stay in themselves. They all come with a television and personal phone lines. There is also a communal kitchen, living room, dining room, computer room, a library, a gym, a craft room and a reference room where women can learn more about their ailment and the treatment.
In Good Company
Women don’t feel alone at the centre because everyone staying there is going through different stages of the same thing. The House also offers several classes—everything from group sessions where guests can talk about their feeling to cooking, painting, sewing and painting classes. They have accommodated women from all across Canada, from B.C. to Nova Scotia. And not only is it a much more comfortable environment for these women, but also, the cost is substantially lower than any hotel in the city.
Be Compassionate
The foundation is based on donations, so they need all the help they can get. The current, Sorrentino’s Compassion House is always operating at full capacity. They have an annual Dash’n for Compassion run, a half marathon that operates from sponsors.
