Recently expanded and completely renovated, the historic, three storey brick mansion housing the Strathcona Branch of the Edmonton Public Library is an impressive and beloved landmark in the Whyte Avenue shopping and entertainment area. It’s just a ‘shop, skip and a jump’ from the Farmer’s Market, specialty clothing boutiques and a plethora of restaurants. Be sure to stop by on your way home to pick up books and items you’ve requested online ahead of time. It’s also a great spot to sit and relax after being out in the crowds of Whyte Avenue. Natural light streams through the many windows, and comfortable armchairs are tucked into inviting nooks on three levels of this luxurious, majestic library.
So Much to Do
The large room on the top floor is perfect for book and story time programs, author talks and other special events. Check by the front door for news about upcoming library events and community information. Take your time to browse through the vast selection of hardcover and paperback books, music CDs, DVDs, magazines and newspapers, reference and research materials, audio-cassettes, videocassettes, large print, regular print and audio-visual materials in more than thirty languages, as well as government information from local, provincial and federal levels.
Free Internet
The library is one of the few places where any member of the public can get free computer and internet access. The Strathcona branch seems to have computer workstations at every turn, providing computer and Internet access at no additional charge, even for those that don’t have a public library card: they are issued a temporary card for internet access purposes. It’s like being right inside a precious treasure chest of knowledge and culture.
