Profile Last Updated: April 02, 2009
The Way of Life actually began as a school for survivors of all stripes, helping them physically, mentally, and spiritually to make better choices, practice proper nutrition, alternative medicine, and much more. Using an adapted version of the 12-step program from Alcoholics Anonymous, for eight years between 1987 and 1995, Way of Life and its volunteers held weekly meetings for young offenders and women inmates within the Correctional Services of Ontario system as part of a positive assertiveness program. From the owner’s important work and success with such a program, she has made the Way of Life Association Inc. a charitable corporation that now serves prisons, schools, and communities across Canada, the U.S., and abroad. Lucky for Edmonton, she also expanded west to Alberta, opening the Way of Life restaurant, which espouses the same core values of her workshops.
Seasoned Experiences
The owner of Way of Life has been a vegan since 1983 and definitely knows her way around her self-described French vegan food kitchen. Offering a new menu upon each day’s opening, the food that is prepared is never cooked in oil (only in purified water), and is absolutely sure to be well-balanced with carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and water. No spices are used, and dishes are only seasoned with herbs such as basil, oregano, and parsley. To this effect, three of the more popular menu items known to be served at Way of Life include the Healthy Green Juice made with pineapple juice, mint leaves, spinach, and parsley, the Soup of the Day, which is always good, no matter what day it is, and the Yammy Carob Mousse, made with carob chips, soya milk, and avocado.
Phase it In
This is a restaurant truly like no other in Edmonton, offering vegan cooking classes, natural remedy classes, effective cleansing for addictions and depression (based on natural remedies), life and social skills programs, the 12 Steps to Health program, and much more. But what makes it the most unique is its schedule. Way of Life is open for business based on the lunisolar calendar made up of 354 days and beginning its year in March/April. While most people operate based on the Gregorian calendar of 365 days, with the new year beginning in January, the lunisolar calendar that Way of Life runs on means the restaurant has a schedule prepared four months in advance to determine its hours based on the moon’s cycle.
Listen and Learn
It is with this sense of the earth and surroundings that Way of Life cultivates a welcoming atmosphere in which its customers experience peace and calm, as well as the freedom to discuss all ranges of conversation topics amongst themselves and the owner. Without a doubt, there’s something to be learned at the Way of Life.
